Abstract

This article deals with the first ever complete rhymed English traslation of Diwan-e-Ghalib   by Servat Rehman. This translation was published with the name of “Diwan-e-Ghalib: Complete Translation” by Ghalib institute, New Delhi in 2003. This book is very much significant due to the fact that, the first ever complete rhymed translation of Mirza  Ghalibs Mutadawal Diwan and number of renderings from Nuskha-e-Hamidia,  and Urdu-e-Mualla etc. There are some problems in poetic translation of Ghalib’s Poetry in this book. Translation of poetry is not such an easy task. If it is Ghalib’s poetry it becomes the responsibility of the translator to translate on rhym ground. It has been analysed on technical & linguistic basis. Servat Rehman seemes to be a little bit successful in transmitting the meaning but fails to maintain the real and faitful impact of Ghalib’s poetry.

Yousaf Hussain Khan has translated the entire prevalent Urdu Diwan of Ghalib with the tilte of “Urdu Ghazalz of Ghalib”, published in 1977 by Ghalib Institute, New Delhi. The arrangement of the text in mentioned book is according to “Nuskha-e-Arshi”. Adding to the Ghazals of prevalent Diwan, verses were also chosen from “Nuskha-e-Hamidia”, “Urdu-e-Muala ky Khatoot” and “Biyaz-e-Alai”. Yousaf Hussain Khan has mentioned in the preamble that he started to translate this poetry in August 1974 and completed just within five months, in December 1974. He professed about his love with Ghalib that wasn’t a rush up of two or three years only rather he was to be in love with Ghalib about half a century.
